The Gilbert Family Business: Bar G Ranch

Located in the central area of the state of Utah around 150 miles Southeast of Salt Lake City is the small historic community of Castle Dale.  Nestled between  the Manti-La Sal National Forest and the Cedar Mountain Recreational Area this sparsely populated area of the state offers an abundance of natural beauty.  The area offers spectacular scenery including the Little Grand Canyon, Moab,  Sid’s Mountain and more.  Like other communities in this area known as Castle Country,  the major economic base is farming and livestock raising as well as coal mining.  The rugged natural beauty of this desert landscape blends well with the lifestyle of the rugged individuals that live there.

A Death in the Family

I regret to inform everyone that Princess Hillary has passed away.  She died Friday 1-11-12 at 18 years and 2 months old at my place in East Texas.  I’m sure most of you are familiar with this great cow as she has calves from Texas to Canada and in between.  From what I’ve learned in my short time dealing with Watusi, I think it’s safe to say she positively impacted the breed with great magnitude.  Her last calf born was a heifer calf and is currently happily eating hay in my pasture.  It was a sad day at the ranch and she will be missed.  Her loud unique bellow will only be heard on YouTube from now on.  I hope all is well and that you’re all having a great new year.

Who needs a chute?

WWA Board member, Rodney Barnhart, submitted this photo with the caption “I guess that I wasted all that money on a fancy longhorn squeeze chute…”  Well that might be the case, but at minimum wage the cost of 1 hour of this operation would exceed $150.00, might make that chute seem more reasonable.

Liar’s Lake Kenya Jim

JIMMY2

Liar’s Lake Kenya Jim was born to the herd of Texas Safari owned by the late A. C. Parsons, Clifton, Texas.  He was purchased as a youngster by Liar’s Lake of Sparta, Missouri and served as their premier herdsire for many years.  Kenya Jim’s dam, Kathy (from Catskill Game Farm) was one of the highest selling females in the breed, ultimately selling for $40,000.00.  His sire, Heinz, was owned and utilized by the Catskill Game Farm, Catskill, New York one of the premier breeding operations of the breed.

Fonz

Fonz, a Grandson of the famous Man Dingo was a great producer in his own right.  He sired many colorful and correct calves which have been successful in the show ring as well as making their own contributions to the breed.  Fonz was  bred by Robert Baney of Sterling, Colorado and was purchased and used as a main herdsire by Liar’s Lake of Sparta, Missouri for years.

Rambo, WWAFP307

Rambo was born at the Rare Animal Survival Center in Ocala, Florida and proved the successful result of one of the original breeding programs in the United States. Rambo had it all, a body weight of 1600 pounds; horn circumference of 23 inches; 41 inch length to each individual horn and 54 inches from tip to tip (not measured along the curves). There is no question that this bull was one of the best representatives of this special breed.  He was used by the famous Catskill Game Farm in their purbred program for most of his life and can be found in the background of many of the top animals of the Watusi breed.  Rambo
